There is a tendency to equate being healthy with simply losing weight or being thin, leading to the discontent of a vast number of Americans. At any given time, there are around 108 million people on diets in the United States. But what if we could change this? What if we simply refused to be a part of these overwhelming statistics? What if we threw out our scales, realizing that the number isn’t an accurate measure of our self-worth and weight-loss efforts? By altering our lifestyles and making simple shifts each day, we can put an end to the money and time wasted by trying fad diets - and finally declare independence from our weight-loss woes!
As holistic health practitioners, we don’t believe in quick fix diets when it comes to weight loss and wellness.
We all have completely different bodies and minds, and there is no “one-size-fits-all” cure. We believe that creating wellness as a lifestyle is about putting an end to the negative wellness banter: the constant back and forth, lose-10-gain-15, yo-yo dieting nonsense.
Rather than falling victim to yet another trend, fad, or diet, there are ways to create permanent habits for a healthy, happy lifestyle. In doing so, we want to strip the words “diet” and “calorie” out of our vocabularies and replace them with qualities like wellness, strength, and mindfulness. While it does take consistent effort nutritionally, physically and psychologically, it is most definitely possible.
First and foremost, if you want to change how you look on the inside, you have to change what you’re putting into your body and how you’re taking care of yourself. Establish morning habits to start your day off right: Drink warm lemon water right after the alarm clock interrupts your sleep cycle. Adding lemon will help with your digestion, detoxify your body and make you feel energized and ready for the day! But don’t stop there! Drink water throughout the day to keep your metabolism functioning at its full potential. Staying hydrated boosts energy and curbs cravings. It’s also important to not skip breakfast. Skipping meals can negatively affect your metabolism and leave you feeling lethargic and irritable. But listen to your body, and do what feels right for you. Always.
Drink an abundance of greens: Drinking raw, organic blends (aka healthy smoothies), or cold pressed juices, consisting of dark leafy vegetables is a fast and easy way to meet your daily serving of fresh produce in one meal. You can select your favorite vegetables, alternate them and mix them together in a blender, or juicer to create your desired taste. Even taking wheatgrass shots in the morning will help balance pH by supplying vitamins, amino acids and minerals. When you fuel your body with blended nourishment, the benefits are numerous, including: increased immunity, fiber retention, colon cleansing, increased energy, revitalization, and higher satiety after meals. Don’t be shy of fiber! It is vital for carrying fats & toxins out of your body.
Eat live and raw foods:At this point, you’re probably thinking, more greens? The answer is yes – We cannot stress enough how important it is to eat green and clean, especially for weight loss! Vegetables contain fiber that boost metabolism, allow for a faster digestion, and keep you fuller longer. This will enhance the body’s ability to discard waste, thus catalyzing weight loss. Raw foods also contain enzymes that enhance chemical digestive processes.
Spend more time in the kitchen: Instead of ordering take-out (again!), prepare your own meals to avoid processed food and to know what you’re putting into your body. Add variety to meals by incorporating different spices and healthy fats. Adding spice such as hot peppers or cayenne pepper not only boost metabolism, it also curbs your appetite! Eating healthy fats such as monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and omega-3s increase fullness, and therefore control your weight and fight fatigue. Try substituting cheese for an avocado or fueling up on a handful of almonds. You can also top your leafy greens and vibrant veggies with homemade dressings. Try mixing 3 Tbs. lemon juice, 2 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil, garlic, and salt and freshly ground pepper for a tasty, healthy dressing! When cooking, also make sure to practice portion control, which will allow you to cook for multiple days to save time and money! It may seem tedious, but your body (and wallet) will thank you in the end!
Perhaps most importantly never starve yourself or skip meals! Food is fuel and your body needs it to function and have a clear mind. If you’re considering eating lighter on a day when feeling particularly puffy, eat and drink anti-bloating foods and teas like ginger, peppermint, lemon, & asparagus. Plan ahead if you have a busy day and know you won’t have time to sit down and eat. Stock up on blends for liquid meal nourishment & replacement – as well as juices! You can also keep a stash of healthy bars nearby to keep your body nourished and your adrenals happy.
Just get moving: Even on the busiest days, try and squeeze a 10-minute break in to rev your body up! Getting outside and walking on a lunch break is a great way to promote weight loss and increase Vitamin D exposure. You could even try committing to always taking the stairs. It’s a great and easy way to increase your heart rate and get the blood pumping.
Mix up your workouts: By consistently mixing up your workouts, you’ll keep your metabolism and muscles guessing, along with decreasing boredom and increasing motivation. Try lifting weights as a way to vary your exercise regimen. Strength training helps give your metabolism a boost. (Hint: it doesn’t have to be a lot of weight, 8-10lb dumbbells will do the trick.)
Jumping on a rebounder can help to support the circulation of limbs, thus alleviating early signs of aging and body weakness. If nothing more, it’s just plain fun! Taking the time to jump up and down on a trampoline (rebounder) reaffirms the idea that wellness isn’t always a chore. If we dedicate joyful and active time for ourselves, our quality of life greatly increases.
Avoid and control stress: Using Essential Oils such as lavender, cedar wood or lemon can help reduce stress and help the body heal naturally. Incorporating daily meditation or yoga practice into your wellness regimen also helps turn the stress switch off. By taking at least 30-45 minutes out of your busy schedule to devote to your own body through meditation and yoga, you will change your overall perspective of life. Keeping still, removing all distractions, and stretching emphasize self-reflection and a deeper appreciation for life.
Adapt more mindful eating habits: Eat slowly and consciously. Eating too fast can cause bloating and may have you overeating without even realizing it. Also, be mindful of eating times and cravings. First, try breathing away cravings. Breathe deeply or consciously. Deep breaths can take you out of your immersion of momentary stress, oxygenate the brain and help reduce stress hormones. During times when a craving for sweets is out of control, try snacking on an apple with almond butter and cinnamon. Cinnamon boosts metabolism!
Get enough sleep: Without sleep, it’s harder to plan your meals, to exercise, and to consciously eat healthy. Without a properly functioning mind, it’s incredibly difficult to focus on our bodies. Also, proper sleep is very important for increasing our metabolism.
Attending wellness-related retreats: Retreats are motivation to continue your weight loss journey and just another reminder that your hard work will eventually pay off. Take the time to dedicate to yourself, enjoy the journey and stay encouraged, for your efforts will not go unnoticed.
